The wild goat is a very special animal. It is the ancestor of the goats we see on farms today. These goats live in many different places. They like forests and shrublands. They also love rocky areas.

Sadly, they face many hard jobs today. Their homes are being lost or broken. People also hunt them. They must even fight farm animals for food. Because of this, they are listed as near threatened.

Life for a wild goat follows a steady rhythm. In Dagestan, males start courting females in mid-December. This mating season lasts until the third week of January. A mother goat carries her baby for about 170 days. This time is called gestation. She usually gives birth to one to three kids. This happens between late June and mid-July.

The kids can move almost right after they are born. They stay with their mothers for six months.

Scientists have studied these goats for a long time. Johann Christian Polycarp Erxleben named the wild goat in 1777. He looked at goats in the Caucasus and Taurus Mountains. Later, Allan Octavian Hume named a group in 1874. He used the name Capra blythi for horns found in Sindh.

There is still much to learn about them. Some scientists think the Chiltan ibex might be a hybrid. This means it could be a mix with a markhor.

Wild goats live in many different countries. They range from Turkey in the west to Pakistan in the east. They live in Iran, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan too.

In Iran, they like west-facing areas with rocks and water. They stay on steep slopes far from roads. In Azerbaijan, they live in Ordubad National Park. In Pakistan, they live in Kirthar National Park. These places help them stay safe.

Every goat has its own way of growing up. Females reach sexual maturity in about two years. Males take much longer to grow up. They usually reach this stage at four years old.

A goat can live for 12 to 22 years. In one study, groups had between two and 131 goats. Most groups had two females for every one male. This helps the whole herd stay strong and healthy.
