Many people call this animal the aoudad. It lives in dry, rocky mountains and steep canyons. These sheep are very important to their desert homes. They are also very good at surviving in hard places. They are known for being very agile on cliffs.

These animals have a very interesting way of living. They are crepuscular, which means they are most active during the early morning and late afternoon. They rest during the hottest parts of the day. To stay hydrated, they eat grasses, bushes, and lichens. They can actually get all their water from their food. If they find a pool, they will drink and wallow in it.

Scientists have studied these sheep for a long time. The name Ammotragus lervia comes from Greek words for sand and goat. This describes their sandy-brown hair. One subspecies was described by Pallas in 1777. Another subspecies, the Egyptian Barbary sheep, was described in 1827. Some people thought the Egyptian version was extinct. However, researchers found them again in the eastern desert of Egypt in 2002.

There are many facts about how they look and where they go. A Barbary sheep can jump over 2 meters high while standing. Their horns are triangular and curve out, back, and then in. These horns can grow to be very long. In the winter of 1957-1958, people released 42 sheep in Texas. They wanted to attract hunters to the Palo Duro Canyon. In Spain, they were released in 1970 to Sierra Espuña Regional Park.

You can think of these sheep as desert explorers. They are extremely nomadic and travel constantly across mountain ranges. They often run uphill when they sense danger. In their home, they once had to watch for lions and leopards. Now, they face new challenges like hunting and losing their habitats. They are even found in places like Croatia and the Canary Islands.
