The males are called rams and they have huge, curved horns. These horns can weigh up to 30 pounds. That is as much as all the other bones in a male's body!

Females are called ewes and have shorter, straighter horns. These sheep are very important to the health of their land. Scientists watch them to see if the environment is doing well.

These sheep have a special way of using their horns. During mating season, rams compete to see who is the strongest. They use a behavior called agonistic behavior to settle things. Two rams will walk away from each other and then turn around. They jump and lunge into headbutts to clash their horns.

To stay safe, their skulls have special bony parts. These parts help protect their brains from the heavy impact. Frequent sparring can even wear the tips of their horns away.

Bighorn sheep have a long history in North America. They first arrived from Siberia over the Bering Land Bridge. This happened during the Pleistocene period, about 750,000 years ago.

Their population was once huge, reaching into the millions. They were even part of the stories of Native Americans. However, the number of sheep dropped very low by the year 1900. This happened because of overhunting and diseases from farm animals.

Today, scientists recognize three main types of bighorn sheep.

The Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep live in the mountains. The Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep live in California. This group is currently endangered.

The third type is the desert bighorn sheep. They live in hot areas of the United States and Mexico. Some of these live in the Peninsular Ranges of California. They must adapt to very different climates and environments.

Living in the wild can be a hard job for a sheep. They live on steep, rocky cliffs to hide from predators.

Animals like mountain lions, wolves, and bears hunt them. Lambs are the most at risk from these predators. Bighorns also face danger from sickness like pneumonia. This sickness can sometimes kill 90% of a group. They must also stay away from deep snow to move easily. They prefer dry slopes where they can find food and grass.
