Dall sheep are wild sheep found in the mountains of northwestern North America.

They live in high, alpine areas. These places include parts of Alaska and the Yukon Territory. They also live in the Northwest Territories and British Columbia. These sheep need steep, rugged ground to live safely. This rocky land helps them find food and hide from predators.

These animals are very important to the mountain ecosystems they call home.

These sheep have a special way of staying warm in the cold. Their coats have a soft wool undercoat. On top, they have long, stiff, and hollow guard hairs. These hairs help protect them from the wind and snow. They eat many things like grasses, sedges, and willow shrubs.

During the spring, they even travel long distances to find mineral licks. These licks provide extra minerals to help their bodies stay healthy.

Scientists use many tools to study these sheep. The name "dalli" comes from William Healey Dall. He was an American naturalist who lived from 1845 to 1927. For a long time, people grouped sheep by the color of their fur. They thought Stone sheep were different because of their color. Now, scientists use DNA to understand their history better. This helps them see how different groups of sheep are related.

There are many interesting facts about how they grow. Rams are the males, and ewes are the females. This difference in looks is called sexual dimorphism. Rams are larger and have massive, curling horns.

These horns grow in rings called annuli. Scientists can look at these rings to see how old a sheep is. A ram might live to be 12 or 16 years old. In the winter, a lamb might lose 40% of its body weight.

Life in the mountains can be quite difficult. Wolf packs, coyotes, and bears are their main predators.

Even golden eagles can hunt the young lambs. To stay safe, ewes often pick steep slopes to raise their babies. Rams also use their horns to fight for dominance. They run at each other and hit heads to show who is strongest. This helps keep order within their groups throughout the year.
