While researchers in 1940 once identified seven different subspecies, recent genetic studies have simplified this. Most scientists now recognize only three distinct subspecies based on their DNA. These include the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, the Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep, and the desert bighorn sheep. The Sierra Nevada subspecies is currently considered endangered by the United States government. 
The Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep inhabit the mountains of the United States and Canada. The Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep are genetically distinct and live specifically in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. Finally, the desert bighorn sheep live in the hot, arid regions of the Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico. Within the desert group, there are three lineages: Nelson's, Mexican, and Peninsular. These lineages live in different desert biomes, which means they have likely adapted to different climates and environmental pressures. 
The history of the bighorn sheep is a story of great change. Millions of years ago, wild sheep crossed the Bering Land Bridge from Siberia into Alaska during the Pleistocene epoch. This happened roughly 750,000 years ago. At one point, their population in North America was massive, reaching into the millions. They were so common that they became part of the mythology of Native Americans. However, by 1900, the population had crashed to only a few thousand individuals. 
This dramatic decline was caused by several human-related factors. Overhunting and habitat destruction significantly reduced their numbers. Additionally, diseases were introduced to the sheep through domestic livestock. One major threat is infectious pneumonia, caused by bacteria like *Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae*. When these pathogens are introduced, they can spread rapidly through a herd. In some cases, these outbreaks have caused mortality rates as high as 90% in a single population. 
Surviving in the wild requires constant vigilance against predators and the environment. Bighorn sheep prefer rugged, rocky cliffs and steep terrain where they can find cover. They often inhabit alpine meadows or grassy slopes, but they avoid areas with deep snow. They prefer drier slopes where annual snowfall is less than about 24 inches. This helps them move more easily to find food. They must also watch for predators like mountain lions, wolves, and bears. 
Bighorn sheep are more than just interesting animals; they are vital indicators of environmental health. Because they are sensitive to human-induced changes, scientists study them to understand how ecosystems are functioning. Their presence can tell us much about the quality of the land and the stability of the climate. By protecting the bighorn, humans also help protect the complex mountain and desert systems they call home.
