This state included the city of Siena and parts of southern Tuscany. It became a very important center for art and money in Europe. Many people traveled there to trade goods like wool and salt. Siena was a place where big ideas and beautiful things grew. It was a major power during the Middle Ages.

Siena grew through many changes in how it was ruled. At first, a bishop held the power in the city. In 1167, the city declared it was independent from the bishop. By 1179, the people had a written constitution to guide them.

Later, a group called the Nine took control in 1286. This group was backed by the Noveschi, a party of merchant families. These leaders helped Siena grow in wealth and military strength.

One very famous moment happened during the Battle of Montaperti. On 4 September 1260, the Sienese fought a large army from Florence.

The Sienese army had about 20,000 men. The Florentine army was much larger with 33,000 men. Legend says a thick white cloud helped the Sienese win. In reality, traitors in the Florentine army caused chaos. This victory helped start a "golden age" for the city.

During this golden age, Siena became a center for learning and art. They built the huge Siena Cathedral and the Palazzo Pubblico.

In 1240, they even started a university for students. They also built strong walls to protect the city.

In 1472, they founded a bank called Monte dei Paschi. This bank is still active today as the oldest in the world. It shows how much Siena cared about money and trade.

Eventually, hard times began to change the Republic. The Black Death sickness hit the city in 1348. This caused the economy to decline and created political trouble. After many years of fighting, Siena faced a hard siege.

The city surrendered on 21 April 1555. This ended the long life of the Republic. Its lands were eventually joined with the Duchy of Florence.
