He lived and worked in the city of Siena. He is known for creating the Sienese school of art. He also helped start the Trecento Gothic style. People loved his art because it felt warm and inviting. His paintings were often used in religious and government buildings. He was one of the most important artists of his time.

Duccio used a special way to make his art. He painted on wood panels using egg tempera. This means he mixed paint with egg to make it stick. He also added gold leaf to make his work shine.

He was a master of this delicate method. He used light and dark colors to make shapes look round. This is called modeling. It helped hands, faces, and feet look three-dimensional. He even put his characters in buildings to show depth.

We do not know everything about Duccio's early life. We know he was active in Tuscany during the late 13th century. He was 23 years old in the year 1278. At that time, he painted twelve account book cases. Some people think he studied under a master named Cimabue. Others think he traveled to Constantinople to learn. Historians look at old records to learn about him. These records show he might have had seven children.

Duccio completed many big projects for famous places. In April 1285, he was asked to paint the Rucellai Madonna. This was for a chapel in Florence. Later, he worked on the Maestà for the Siena Cathedral. He started this huge work in 1308. He finished it by June 1311. Only about 13 of his works still exist today. His paintings show great emotion and tender feelings. For example, he painted a mother and child looking very close.

Many other artists followed Duccio's beautiful style. He had many pupils who learned from him. Some were in his workshop, and some just copied him. Artists like Simone Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers were influenced by him. There were even three groups of followers over many years. His impact reached all of Tuscany and Siena. Today, you can see his art in many museums. Some of his works are in New York and London.
