geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bhatpara is a busy city in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India. It sits right on the banks of the Hooghly river. The town is part of a large area called the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority. You can find the main town tucked between the river to the west and a railway track to the east. This track connects Sealdah to Krishnanagar. The city is surrounded by many different places like Naihati and Dogachhia.

The city has a very long and interesting history. Its name comes from the ancient name "Bhatta-Palli." In this name, "Bhatta" refers to a group of Sanskrit scholars called Brahmins. The word "palli" means a village or a local area. For a long time, Bhatpara was a famous place for learning Sanskrit and Vedic texts. It is also one of the oldest municipalities in the state of West Bengal. It became its own municipality in 1899 after being part of Naihati.

In the past, Bhatpara was a huge center for industry. Many factories called jute mills were built along the river. These mills were very important for making things from jute plants. Some mills, like the Kankinara Jute Mill, started working as far back as 1883. However, things changed as the jute industry faced hard times. Many mills, such as the Nafar Chandra Jute Mills, had to close down. Because of this, many people now travel to Kolkata every day to find work.

Life in Bhatpara involves many different people and activities. In 2011, the population was about 386,019 people. Most people live in urban areas, and the city is quite crowded. The weather can feel very intense depending on the season. Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius. In the winter, it gets much cooler and can drop below 10 degrees Celsius. The rainy season usually lasts from mid-July until late October.

There are many ways to get around this large city. You can ride on auto rickshaws between Naihati and Bhatpara. People also use buses, cycle rickshaws, and even boats. The boat services can take you across the river to places like Chinsura. Three different railway stations serve the area: Shyamnagar, Jagaddal, and Kankinara. These stations are part of the Kolkata Suburban Railway system. It only takes about one hour to reach Kolkata by train.
