This is an ancient Roman amphitheater used for shows and opera. Because it is so special, UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site in the year 2000.

The history of Verona is very long and sometimes a mystery.

No one knows exactly how the city got its name. Long ago, different groups like the Euganei and the Cenomani lived there. By the year 89 BC, Verona became part of the Roman Empire. The city became very important because many roads met there. Later, different groups like the Goths and the Lombards took control. In 569, the Lombards made it their second most important city. Even the great leader Charlemagne fought against the Lombards in Verona in 774.

Between the 13th and 14th centuries, a family called the della Scala ruled the city.

Under their rule, the city became very rich and powerful. A leader named Cangrande I della Scala helped the city grow. He was a great warrior and a patron of the arts. The family even built new walls to protect the city.

You can still see many monuments from the della Scala era today. However, the family's rule ended in 1387 when Antonio della Scala fled the city. After that, Verona eventually became part of Venice in 1405.

Verona has also been part of many other lands over time.

It was under the rule of the Holy Roman Empire and Austria. In 1797, Napoleon occupied the city. Later, it became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866. The city also saw dark times during World War II.

During this time, many people were hurt or taken away. After the war, Verona was a strategic place during the Cold War. It even held a strong American military presence for a long time.

Many people know Verona because of the writer William Shakespeare.
