Mantua

geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Mantua is a beautiful city in the Lombardy region of Italy.

It sits halfway between the famous cities of Milan and Venice. The city is located on the banks of the Mincio River.

This river flows from Lake Garda toward the Adriatic Sea. Mantua is surrounded on three sides by large, man-made lakes. These lakes are called the Upper, Middle, and Lower lakes.

They were created in the 12th century to help defend the city.

The way the city is built changed over many centuries. Long ago, people lived in settlements here during the Neolithic times. They also lived here during the Bronze Age and the Gallic phases. Later, Roman residents lived in the area during the 3rd century AD. In the year 1198, a man named Alberto Pitentino changed the river. This work helped create the water system that protects the city. A fourth lake called Lake Pajolo once existed too. However, that lake dried up at the end of the 18th century.

A powerful family named the Gonzaga ruled Mantua for a long time. They took control of the city in 1328. The Gonzaga family made Mantua a famous center for art and music.

Music and history are very important in Mantua. The city played a big role in the history of opera. A famous composer named Claudio Monteverdi lived and worked here. In 1607, he premiered his opera called L'Orfeo in the city.
