It sits at a very important crossroads where many paths meet. The city is located near the border of the Lombardy region. It is close to the big city of Milan. Piacenza is built where two rivers come together. One river is the Trebbia, which flows from the Apennine Mountains. The other is the mighty River Po, which flows toward the east.

Being in this spot makes the city a busy place for travel. The famous artist Leonardo da Vinci once called it a "Land of passage." This is because people have used this area to move between lands for a long time. Today, it sits on major roads like the A1 and the A21. These paths connect cities like Bologna, Milan, Brescia, and Turin. The city is also a place for learning. It is home to three different universities for students.

The history of Piacenza began a very long time ago. Before the Romans arrived, tribes like the Ananes lived in the area. The Romans founded Piacenza as a military colony in 218 BC. They built strong walls around the city to protect it. Later, the city became a very rich place in Europe. During the Middle Ages, trade and farming helped it grow. A gold coin from the year 1626 even says "Piacenza flourishes."

Life in the city has changed through many different rulers. For a time, it was part of the Duchy of Milan. Later, it was ruled by the House of Farnese. In the 1800s, the city became part of the Kingdom of Italy. Many people in Piacenza voted to join the new nation in 1860. Because of this, the king called it the "First-born of the Unification of Italy."

In more recent history, the city faced very difficult times. During World War II, Piacenza was heavily bombed by the Allies. This happened because the city had important bridges and railway yards. These bridges over the Trebbia and the Po were vital for moving supplies. Even after such hard times, the city remains a key part of northern Italy. Today, you can see its history in its beautiful buildings and churches.
