The city is constructed upon a group of 126 islands. These islands sit within the Venetian Lagoon, which is a shallow, enclosed bay. The lagoon is positioned between the mouths of the Po and Piave rivers.

To navigate this watery landscape, the city uses 472 bridges to link different land portions. This complex geography creates a setting often called the "City of Water" or "The Floating City."

The population of Venice is distributed across several different areas. As of 2025, the municipality of Venice has 249,466 inhabitants. However, only about 50,000 people live in the historical island center, known as the centro storico. Most residents live on the mainland, which is called the terraferma. Additionally, roughly 25,000 people live on other islands within the lagoon estuary.

Venice is also part of the Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan Area. This statistical metropolitan area includes the cities of Padua and Treviso. Together, these locations support a total population of 2.6 million people.

The origins of Venice are tied to waves of migration and survival. The name is derived from the ancient Veneti people.

Historians suggest the original population consisted of refugees. These people fled from Roman cities like Padua, Treviso, and Aquileia. They were escaping Germanic and Hun invasions. These refugees sought safety in the marshy lagoons. Some early inhabitants were known as incolae lacunae, or lagoon dwellers. Tradition marks the city's founding on March 25, 421, with the dedication of the church of San Giacomo on the Rialto islet.

As time passed, Venice grew from a Byzantine outpost into a powerful independent state. The city was the capital of the Republic of Venice for nearly a millennium. This era lasted from 810 until 1797.

During this time, Venice became a major maritime power. It was a thalassocracy, which is a state that uses its navy to control sea routes. The Republic managed vast territories along the Adriatic Sea. It also held lands on the Italian mainland, known as the terraferma. This mainland territory helped secure trade routes and provided essential grain supplies.

Venice reached its greatest economic prominence during the 14th century. The city functioned as a major international financial center.

Merchants traded valuable goods such as silk, grain, and spices. The Venetian Arsenal served as the base for naval power. Some historians consider the Arsenal to be the first factory in history.

The Republic also maintained a reliable gold currency called the ducat. This stable monetary policy helped build global confidence in Venetian trade. The city's wealth allowed it to become a central hub for commerce between Western Europe and Asia.

The city has left a lasting legacy in the realms of art and music. Venice was a major center for the Italian Renaissance. It was also vital to the history of operatic and instrumental music. The city is the birthplace of Baroque composers Antonio Vivaldi and Tomaso Albinoni.

The architecture of the city reflects its many territories. You can see these influences in the many beautiful buildings and churches. Venice has earned many nicknames, such as "La Serenissima" and "Queen of the Adriatic." In 1987, the lagoon and the city were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the 21st century, Venice faces significant environmental and social challenges. It remains a major cultural center and a top tourist destination. However, the city must deal with overtourism and pollution.

High tide peaks, or acqua alta, pose a constant threat to the islands.

Large cruise ships also cause concern when they sail too close to historical buildings.

Because of these ongoing threats, the city's UNESCO status is under constant examination. Protecting this delicate balance between history and modern life remains a priority.
