His life happened during a huge time of change for the Roman Empire. During his time, Christianity began to become the main religion of the state. Damasus worked hard to make the faith of the Catholic Church very strong. He spent much of his time protecting these shared beliefs. He also helped the Church in Rome talk with the Church in Antioch.

One of his most famous jobs involved making a special list of holy books. This list is called a canon. In the year 382, Damasus led a big meeting called the Council of Rome.

This meeting helped decide which books should be in the official Bible. He also wanted the Bible to be easier for people to read in Latin. To do this, he asked a famous scholar named Jerome for help. Jerome worked on a new version of the Bible called the Vulgate. This version used older Greek texts to make the translation more accurate.

Becoming a leader was not always easy for Damasus. When he first became pope, there was a lot of fighting between different groups. Some people wanted a different leader named Ursinus to be in charge. This led to many arguments and even violent fights in the streets of Rome.

Some people even accused Damasus of doing bad things during these fights. However, other historians later defended him. By the year 378, a meeting helped declare that Damasus was the true leader.

Damasus was a man of many different talents. He was not just a religious leader, but also a writer of Latin poems.

Some people believe he might have written a song called the Carmen contra paganos. There are even tiny gold cups with his name on them. These cups might be the first pictures ever made of a pope. Scholars study these items to learn more about his life and his friends. He was a very busy man who left many traces behind.

Today, many people still remember the work of Damasus. The Catholic Church recognizes him as a saint.
