It was mostly home to West Slavic people. The realm grew around the Morava River. This river gave the country its name. The land covered parts of many modern places. These include the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It also reached parts of Hungary, Austria, and Germany.

Some scholars even debate where its exact borders were. Some think it was further south near the Danube River.

This state grew through many important steps. In the early 830s, Prince Mojmír I united different lands. He conquered the nearby principality of Nitra. This helped the realm become much stronger. Later, King Rastislav led the people for many years. He wanted his people to have a way to read. He even asked for teachers to help with this.

This request led to a huge change in culture. It brought new ways of writing and learning.

In 863, two brothers named Cyril and Methodius arrived.

They were missionaries sent to help the people. Cyril likely invented a new writing system called Glagolitic. This was the first alphabet for a Slavic language. They used it to translate religious texts. This helped start a Slavic literary culture. Later, this script was replaced by the Cyrillic alphabet. This was a very important moment for history.

Prince Svatopluk I was a powerful ruler. He ruled from the year 870 to 894.

Under his leadership, the empire reached its largest size. He held power over many different regions. However, things became difficult after he died. Internal fights and disagreements broke out among the people. These conflicts made the empire much weaker. The empire could not stay united for long.

Great Moravia eventually came to an end. This happened between the years 902 and 907.

The Hungarians moved into the territory during this time. They took over much of the land. Even though the state fell, its history remains. We can still see its past in old items. Archaeologists find silver crosses and beautiful jewelry today. These objects tell the story of a lost world.
