A guardian angel is a special kind of angel. These beings are assigned to protect and guide a person, a group, or even a whole nation.

The idea of these protective beings is very old. People have believed in them throughout all of history. Many different religions have their own ways of describing how these angels work. They act as helpers between the divine and the world of people.

Different faiths explain how these angels act in their daily lives. In Zoroastrianism, they are known as Arda Fravaš. These angels act as guides for a person during their entire life. They once patrolled the edges of heaven but chose to stay with people on earth.

In Judaism, angels are often seen as ministers for God. The Hebrew Bible tells stories of angels performing special tasks. For example, the angel Raphael helps a character named Tobias. Some people also believe angels are assigned to watch over certain countries.

History shows how these ideas have grown over many centuries. In the 5th century, a writer named Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite helped organize the different ranks of angels. Later, in the 12th century, Honorius of Autun suggested every soul gets an angel at birth.

The famous thinker Thomas Aquinas also studied this topic. He believed that angels help people as they travel through a dangerous world. In the 15th century, the Catholic Church added a special feast day for them. This day is celebrated every year on October 2nd.

Many specific names and traditions exist within these beliefs. In some Jewish traditions, the angel Lailah is in charge of pregnancy and the night. There are also stories of three angels named Senoi, Sansenoi, and Semangelo. These names were used on special charms to protect children.

In the Catholic tradition, the Church suggests people should not give angels new names. They prefer using the names found in the Bible, like Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Some people even join groups like the Opus Sanctorum Angelorum to grow closer to these angels.

Today, many people still find comfort in the idea of a guardian angel. Pope Francis has spoken about them as "traveling companions." He suggested that the small voice in our hearts telling us to do what is right might be an angel.

Some people believe angels help carry their prayers to God. Others, like the mystic Saint Gemma Galgani, said they could speak directly with their angels. Whether as a guide or a protector, the concept remains a powerful part of many cultures.
