In Christianity, many ideas come from the Book of Revelation. This book tells of an angel with a key. He uses the key to lock up Satan for a thousand years. Different groups have different ideas about how this works. Premillennialists believe Christ will return before this time starts. Postmillennialists think his reign happens through the church. Amillennialists see the thousand years as a metaphor or a symbol.

Other faiths have similar ideas. In Islam, many believe a leader called the Mahdi will come. He will work with Jesus to stop unfairness. In the Baha'i Faith, people believe God renews the City of God every thousand years. Zoroastrianism also speaks of thousand-year periods. These periods end with a king of peace who stops evil. These beliefs can lead to big changes in how people live and act.
