In these tales, a special being shows secrets to a person. This might happen in a dream or a vision. It might even happen on a journey to heaven. These beings show secrets about the past or the future. Many stories use symbols to tell a tale. For example, they might use numbers to mean something special. Some stories use a false name for the author. They might use the name of a famous hero from the past. This helped people trust the new writing. These stories often talk about the end of the world. This is called eschatology. It is the study of the end of an age. People use these stories to understand their own lives. They show how a divine power rules the world. These ideas started a long time ago in Judaism. They stayed important in Islam and Christianity too.
