The word comes from Greek. It means "to lead out." People use this to find deep meanings in writing. They might study holy books. They might also study poems or philosophy.

Long ago, people in Mesopotamia used exegesis. They wrote on clay tablets. These tablets helped them understand laws and medicine. They even studied the stars to predict the future. These old studies help us see how they lived.

Many groups have their own ways to study. In Islam, this is called tafsīr. It helps explain the Qur'an. In Judaism, it is found in Rabbinic literature. Some people look at history to learn more. Others look at how words are used. Some thinkers want to find the original meaning. Others look for a deeper, spiritual meaning. This work helps us see things from many points of view.
