Hermeneutics is the study of how we understand things.

It is a way to find meaning in texts. This includes holy books, laws, and history. Some people use the word exegesis to talk about studying words. Hermeneutics is broader. It can include how we use speech and body language.

The name comes from a Greek word. It means to translate or interpret. Many people link it to Hermes. He was a Greek god who served as a messenger. He was also known as an inventor of speech.

Different faiths use these tools in their own ways. In Judaism, scholars use rules to study the Torah. They look for plain meanings or secret ones. In Hinduism, the Mimamsa school studied the Vedas. They wanted to learn how to live righteously. Buddhist thinkers use it to find the path to enlightenment.

In Christianity, people study the Bible in many ways. They might look for a moral lesson. They might also look for a spiritual meaning. Some even look for signs about the future. This helps them understand what the writers meant.
