Have you ever wondered how we group art? We use a word called genre. A genre is a style of art or talk. It follows rules that people agree on. These rules help us know what to expect.

In painting, a genre painting shows everyday life. It shows people doing normal things. These are not famous people or heroes. They are just regular people. Some artists also group paintings by what they show. They might make a landscape of trees. Or they might paint a still life of objects.

Books have many genres too. Some are long novels. Others are short stories. You might read a funny comedy or a sad tragedy. Even movies use genres. You might watch a scary horror film. Or you might watch a musical. Music uses genres to group songs by tradition. This helps people find music they love. Genres can even mix together. A story might be a bit of two genres at once. This helps us make sense of all the art in our world.
