Hermeneutics is the theory of how we interpret meaning.

It is a way to understand many different things. This includes holy books, wisdom stories, and philosophical writings. Some people use the word exegesis to talk about this. However, exegesis usually focuses on the grammar of a text. Hermeneutics is much broader than that. It can include verbal speech and even body language. It also looks at how our own ideas affect what we see.

The name comes from a Greek word meaning to translate. Some people link this to the god Hermes. He was a messenger for the gods in Greek myths. He was also known as a trickster and an inventor of speech. This makes him a good symbol for interpretation. Words can reveal a truth or hide it. This can make messages feel confusing or unclear. A good method of interpretation helps find the real meaning.

Many religious traditions have their own ways of doing this. In Judaism, scholars use rules to study the Torah. They look for plain meanings or secret, mystical levels. In Hinduism, the Mimamsa school studied the Vedas. They wanted to learn about Dharma, or righteous living. Buddhist thinkers also use these tools. They want to find the path to spiritual enlightenment.

Christianity has many ways to read the Bible too. One way is the literal sense. This looks at the plain meaning of the words. Another way is the moral sense. This looks for lessons on how to act. Some people use allegorical ways to find deeper patterns. They might see an old story as a pattern for something new. Others use anagogical ways to look at the future.

In the 15th century, hermeneutics changed a lot. It became a tool for history and science. An Italian man named Lorenzo Valla used it in 1440. He proved a famous document was a fake. Later, Friedrich Schleiermacher studied how we understand people. He looked at the grammar and the mind of the writer. He said hermeneutics is the art of avoiding misunderstanding. This helped turn it into a study of all human communication.
