Tafsir is a special way to explain the Quran.

People who write these explanations are called mufassirs. Their main goal is to help people understand the will of God. They look closely at the language, laws, and religious beliefs in the text. This helps readers find clear meaning and conviction. The idea of explaining the Quran is actually found within the Quran itself. Some parts of the book are very clear to read. Other parts are more mysterious and need extra help to understand.

There are two main ways that mufassirs work. The first way is called tafsir bi-al-ma'thur. This means using information that was received from the past. It relies on the Quran itself or the sayings of Muhammad. It also uses reports from his companions and the people who followed them. The second way is called tafsir bi-al-ra'y. This method uses personal reflection and logical thinking. A scholar uses their own reason to find deeper meanings. Different groups, like Sunni or Shia Muslims, may use different traditions for their work.

Writing a tafsir is a very hard job. A mufassir must master many different subjects first. They must be experts in the Arabic language and its grammar. They also need to study rhetoric and theology. It is important for them to know the history of when verses were revealed. This is called Asbab al-Nuzul. They must also understand Islamic law, or fiqh. This helps them avoid making mistakes about legal rules. A good mufassir must always stay consistent with established Islamic beliefs.

The history of tafsir started a long time ago. At first, Muhammad's companions explained the Quran by speaking. They knew the language and the social customs of the time very well. Later, scholars began to write these explanations down in books. Some say Mujahid ibn Jabr wrote very early works around the year 722. The oldest surviving commentary was written by Muqatil ibn Sulayman in the middle of the 8th century. His work mostly gave short notes on the text. Over time, tafsir grew from a small part of other books into its own subject.

Today, there are many different kinds of tafsir books. Some are classic works from the early ages of Islam. Others are modern books written for all kinds of people to read. A scholar named Samuel Ross says there are 2,700 manuscripts of these commentaries. About 300 of them have been published so far. He believes that 96% of the Arabic manuscripts have not been studied yet. This means thousands of new commentaries might still be waiting to be discovered.

Studying these books helps us see how people have thought about faith for centuries.
