Aqidah is an Arabic word that means "creed." It is also used to talk about Islamic theology. The word comes from a root that means "to tie" or "a knot."

This idea of a knot shows how beliefs are held firmly. Some people use aqidah to describe a whole system of beliefs. It can cover many different views and points of debate. This term is a very important part of Islamic studies today. It helps people describe what Muslims believe and how they think about faith.

Many Muslims follow six main articles of faith called Arkan al-Iman.

These six ideas come from the Quran and the Sunnah. All Muslims accept these six points, even if they belong to different groups. First, they believe in one God, which is called Tawhid. This means God is unique and the only being worthy of worship. Second, they believe in angels. Third, they believe in holy books. Fourth, they believe in prophets and messengers. Fifth, they believe in the Last Judgment and resurrection. Sixth, they believe in predestination.

Writing down these beliefs became important early in Islamic history. Scholars wanted to explain their views clearly. They also wanted to answer questions from people with different ideas.

One of the first written creeds is called Fiqh Akbar. It is often linked to a scholar named Abu Hanifa. Other famous scholars, like Al-Ghazali, also wrote about aqidah. Some detailed creeds can contain over 100 different statements of belief. These statements help summarize the position of a specific school or scholar.

There are many different schools of theology within Islam.

In Sunni Islam, some main schools are the Ash'ari and Maturidi schools. The Ash'ari school was founded by Abu al-Hasan al-Ash'ari. He used reason to help explain what was in the holy books. Another group is called the Mu'tazilis. They are known for focusing on human free will. Some people study these ideas through a method called Kalam. Kalam is a way of using speech and logic to find theological principles.

People also study what happens at the end of the world. This study is called eschatology.

It looks at the end of this world and the life that comes after. This includes what happens to human souls after they die. It also covers the resurrection of humans and the Last Judgment. In this view, God will judge the deeds of all people. Some believe there is a place called Paradise for believers. Others speak of a place called Hell for non-believers.
