It is also a part of the adhan, which is the call to prayer. For many, the Shahada is the most common way to show their faith. It is a statement of both worship and ritual.

The oath has two main parts in Sunni Islam. The first part says there is no god but God. This shows a belief in the oneness of God. The second part says Muhammad is the messenger of God. This shows how God provides guidance to people.

Some Shia Muslims include a third part about Ali. They say Ali is the vicegerent of God. This third part is not required to become a Muslim.

People use the Shahada in many special moments. A father might whisper it to a newborn baby. It is also whispered to a person who is dying. Muslims recite it during their five daily prayers. To join the faith, a person must say the words with a sincere heart. This sincere intention is called niyyah. It is what makes the recitation a real act of devotion.

History shows us how the Shahada has changed over time. The two statements are in the Quran. However, they do not appear side by side in the book. They are found in the hadiths instead. In the late seventh century, these phrases appeared on coins.
