This oath is a way to show faith. It is also used in the call to prayer.

The oath has two main parts. The first part says there is no god but God. This shows belief in only one God. The second part says Muhammad is the messenger of God. This shows how God gives guidance to people.

Some Shia Muslims add a third part. This part is about Ali. They do not need this part to join the faith.

People say the Shahada in many ways. A father might whisper it to a new baby. It is also whispered to a person who is dying. Muslims say it during their five daily prayers. To become a Muslim, a person must say these words with a sincere heart.
