Tawhid is a very important idea in Islam. It means the belief that God is one. The word comes from Arabic. It means to unite or make one.

Some Muslims use a finger sign to show this. This sign helps them remember that God is single and unique.

Muslims believe God is different from anything else. God made the whole world. He is also the one who keeps it going. The Quran uses 99 special names for God. These names help people learn about His nature. Some names show that He is kind. Other names show His power.

There is also a concept called shirk. Shirk is the opposite of tawhid. It means giving the power of God to something else. Some shirk is easy to see. Other shirk is hidden in a person's heart. This might happen if someone does good things just to be seen by others.

Many thinkers have studied this idea. Some use logic to explain it. They look at the order in nature. They say the world shows a single creator. Others study how God gives life to all things.
