Before they pray, they must do a special washing. This is called wudu. It is a way to be pure. When they pray, they face the Kaaba in Mecca. This direction is called the qibla.

Salah uses many movements. Each prayer is made of units called rak'ah. A person might stand, bow, or kneel.

During prayer, they also say words from the Quran. Some people pray by themselves. Others pray in a group. This is called praying in congregation.

In a group, people stand in straight rows. A leader called an imam leads the way. Praying together can bring many benefits to the people. Some prayers, like those on Friday, must be done in a group. This can include a sermon called a khutbah.
