A muezzin is a person who calls people to prayer.

This call is called the adhan. It happens five times every day. The muezzin helps the community follow a prayer schedule.

Muezzins are usually men. They are chosen for their good character. They must also have a beautiful voice. The call is like an art form. In Turkey, people even hold contests to find the best muezzin. Long ago, they called from the top of a minaret. This is a tall tower on a mosque. Now, many use microphones and loud speakers. This helps the sound reach far away.

The job started a long time ago. The first muezzin was Bilal ibn Rabah. He was a friend of the prophet Muhammad.

In the past, some cities gave the job to blind men. This was to protect the privacy of people in their homes. Some mosques also had a muwaqqit. This person used math and stars to find prayer times. Many people held both jobs at once.
