A man called a muezzin recites it. He often speaks from a tall tower on a mosque. This is called a minaret. The call happens five times every day. It tells Muslims it is time for their daily prayers.

Some people use microphones to help the sound travel. This lets the call reach people nearby. In some places, the call is a recording. This helps if a muezzin is not there. The first muezzin was Bilal ibn Rabah. He was a freed slave with a beautiful voice.

There are different ways people hear the call. In Turkey, the calls use different musical styles. These styles are called makams. On Fridays, there is a very important prayer. This is called the Jummah prayer.

When people hear the adhan, they often repeat the words. Some say them quietly to themselves. It is a way to show respect for their faith.
