Tawhid is the most important idea in the religion of Islam. The word comes from the Arabic root meaning "to unite" or "to make one."

It describes the belief that God is a single and unique being. This concept is the center of a Muslim's faith and religious life. It teaches that God is indivisible, which means God cannot be split into parts. Many people use a single raised index finger as a symbol of this truth. This gesture is a way to show the oneness of God.

This belief works by setting God apart from everything else in the world. The Quran teaches that God is a universal being rather than a local one. He is seen as the one who creates, maintains, and destroys the universe. To explain how God is both unique and complex, the Quran uses 99 "Excellent Names."

These names, like ar-Rahman, show different parts of God's nature. Some names show His kindness, while others show His power. These names help people understand the connection between the creator and the world.

History shows that many different thinkers have studied tawhid over many centuries. Scholars in fields like philosophy, law, and science have all looked at this idea. One famous figure was Ali, who is credited with establishing Islamic theology. He provided early rational proofs to show that God is one. He argued that God is not like anything else in our imagination. Later, the scholar Avicenna worked on these ideas between the years 965 and 1037. He used deep logic to explore how existence works.

There are specific rules about what to avoid regarding this belief. The opposite of tawhid is called shirk. Shirk happens when someone attributes divinity to something other than God. This can include attributing divine powers to a person or even oneself. There are two main types of shirk described in Islamic teaching. The first is al-shirk al-akbar, which is open and easy to see. The second is al-shirk al-khafi, which is hidden or concealed. This might happen if a person does good deeds just to be noticed by others.

Many people use different ways to connect tawhid to the world they see. Some theologians use a method called a teleological argument. They look at the order and design in nature as evidence of a creator. They believe the way the world works shows a single guiding purpose. Other thinkers, like Avicenna, used a method called an ontological argument. This uses reason and intuition to argue that a "Necessary Existent" must exist. These different paths all try to explain the same central truth of oneness.
