Iman is an Arabic word that means faith or belief.

In Islamic theology, it refers to how a person recognizes faith and their deeds. Many people study how this belief works in different ways. Some Shia theologians suggest that faith is a single pillar. They believe faith lives only in the heart. To them, the heart is the most honest part of a person. In this view, speaking or acting does not change the actual state of faith.

Other scholars have a different way of explaining iman. They believe faith has three important parts that work together. The prophet Muhammad described it as a feeling in the heart, a voicing with the tongue, and an activity with the limbs.

This means a person should believe a truth, speak it, and then live it through their actions. Some groups, like the Ahl al-Sunnah wa'l-Jama'ah, say that faith can increase with good deeds. They also believe that faith can decrease when a person commits sins.

There are six main pillars that form the core of iman. These are known as the arkān al-īmān.

First, followers believe in the existence and oneness of God. Second, they believe in angels, such as Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael. Third, they believe in holy books like the Quran, the Gospel, and the Torah. Fourth, they believe in prophets like Muhammad, Jesus, and Moses. Fifth, they believe in a Day of Judgment. Finally, they believe in God's predestination, which is the idea of a divine decree.

Faith is often described using beautiful images in the Quran. One comparison says that faith is like a tree. This tree has roots that go deep into the soil and branches that spread into the sky.

The Quran also says that faith can lead people out of darkness and into the light. It is a deep feeling that can foster a great love for God. Some people believe that true faith brings a special kind of sweetness to a person's life. This love is not just a feeling, but a way to prioritize certain values in life.

Iman is not just about big ideas, but also about many small actions. A collection called "The Seventy-Seven Branches of Faith" explains this.

This list was compiled by the imam al-Bayhaqi. It says that faith has more than seventy branches. The most important branch is the declaration of faith in Allah. However, even the smallest branch is important, such as removing an obstacle from a path. Other branches include being modest, being kind to others, and even keeping oneself clean.
