An imam is a title for a leader in Islam. The meaning of this word changes depending on a person's faith. For Sunni Muslims, an imam is often the person who leads formal prayers. This usually happens in a mosque. However, an imam can also lead a group of two or more people anywhere.

The people in the group watch the imam and copy his actions. In many mosques, an imam is an official person with a job. In Turkey, the state even appoints imams to work at mosques. These men must have special degrees from a high school or a university.

For many Shia Muslims, the role of an imam is much deeper. They believe imams are special leaders chosen by God. These leaders are meant to be perfect examples for all people. This perfection means they do not commit any sins. This idea is called ismah.

The word imam can also be a title for a great scholar. Some people use it to honor someone who knows a lot about religious laws. These scholars might be experts on the Quran. They might also be the founders of different schools of thought. For example, names like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir are known for their great knowledge.

In history, imams have sometimes been much more than religious leaders. Some imams were also secular rulers who led entire countries. In Oman, imams held both religious and political power. Some of these leaders were elected by the people. Others held their power because it stayed in their family.

In Yemen, Zaidi imams held power for over a thousand years. They even started a kingdom that lasted until 1970.

Today, you can still see the title used in many ways. In Iran, the title is used for very important leaders. For instance, the leader Ruhollah Khomeini is called an imam. Many places in Iran even use his name. You can find an airport, a hospital, and a university named after him.
