Their roles can change depending on the faith. Most clergy members lead special rituals or ceremonies. They also teach others about the beliefs and practices of their religion. Some people use many different names for these leaders. You might hear terms like clergyman, clergywoman, or cleric.

In many faiths, there are specific steps to becoming a leader. In Christianity, many clergy are ordained. This means they are set apart for a specific type of ministry. In the Anglican tradition, new clergy often start as deacons. Those who want to become priests usually wait about a year.

Some traditions have different levels of authority. For example, a bishop might oversee a large group of local churches. These structures help keep the religious community organized.

History shows us how these roles have changed over time. The word "cleric" comes from an old Latin word for a priestly class. In the Middle Ages, most people could not read or write. This job was often held only by the priestly class.

Because of this, the word "clerk" also comes from the same root. This shows how closely reading and religious leadership were linked in the past.

Different religions have their own unique titles and groups. In Islam, leaders might be known as an imam, a sheikh, or a mufti.

Religious leadership connects to many parts of human life. In some places, Buddhist monks in Japan once helped the Emperor by recording births and deaths.

This shows how clergy can help with community tasks. In the United States, some Buddhist groups even offer training in counseling skills. This helps leaders meet the needs of the people they serve. Whether through teaching, ritual, or helping others, clergy play a central role in their traditions.
