Clergy are the leaders within established religious traditions.

Their roles and functions vary across different faiths. Most clergy members preside over specific rituals. They also teach the doctrines and practices of their religion. People use many different terms for individual clergy. These include clergyman, clergywoman, clergyperson, cleric, and ecclesiastic. A priest is often a member of a body of people with special religious authority.

This authority allows them to perform rituals within the sacred sphere.

The word cleric comes from the ecclesiastical Latin word *Clericus*. This term referred to those belonging to the priestly class. The Latin word comes from the Greek *Klerikos*. This Greek term means appertaining to an inheritance. This refers to the Levitical priests of the Old Testament. These priests had no inheritance except the Lord. The word "clergy" comes from two Old French words, *clergié* and *clergie*. These words refer to those with learning. In the Middle Ages, reading and writing were almost exclusively the domain of the priestly class. This history explains why the word "clerk" shares the same root as "cleric."

In Christianity, clergy are often ordained for specific ministries.

Ordination means they are set apart for religious rites. In Anglicanism, clergy exist in three orders of seniority. These are deacons, priests, and bishops. New clergy are first ordained as deacons. Those seeking the priesthood are usually ordained about a year later. Bishops act as overseers for a diocese. A diocese is a group of many parishes. An archbishop may preside over a province, which is a group of dioceses. In some Anglican churches, women may become deacons or priests.

Islam features a wide range of formal and informal religious leaders. These leaders may be known as an imam, caliph, or qadi. Other titles include mufti, sheikh, mullah, muezzin, or an ulema.

In the Jewish tradition, religious leaders often serve as a rabbi or a hazzan. A rabbi acts as a teacher, while a hazzan serves as a cantor. Each of these roles helps maintain the traditions and community life of the faith.

Buddhist clergy are often called the Sangha. This group consists of various orders of male and female monks. These monks are known as *bhikshus* and the nuns are *bhikshunis*.

The Sangha was originally one community founded by Gautama Buddha in the 5th century BC. These early monks lived under a common set of rules called the Vinaya. They often lived an austere life of meditation. They lived as wandering beggars for nine months each year. They stayed in retreat during the rainy season.

As Buddhism spread, monasticism became more diverse. Interactions with other cultures changed how clergy lived and worked. For example, the interaction between Buddhism and Tibetan Bon created Tibetan Buddhism. In China, the interaction between Indian monks and Chinese Confucian or Taoist monks produced Ch'an Buddhism. In Japan, monks once took on administrative functions for the Emperor. They recorded births, marriages, and deaths. This changed their role from purely spiritual to including secular community tasks. In some Japanese traditions, the practice of celibacy was relaxed, and monks were allowed to marry.

Different Buddhist schools follow different rules today. The Mahayana schools tend to be culturally adaptive and innovative. The Theravada schools tend to be more conservative.

In Theravada traditions, monks may follow precepts that forbid touching women. They may also avoid certain secular roles. In the United States, some Buddhist communities are even exploring training in counseling skills. This helps clergy meet the modern needs of their followers. Whether through meditation, manual labor, or teaching, these leaders continue to adapt to the world around them.
