They often act as a mediatory agent. This means they serve as a link between humans and one or more deities. The office or position held by these individuals is known as the priesthood. This term can refer to a single person or a collective group. In many traditions, priests are believed to have privileged contact with the divine. They interpret the meaning of spiritual events for their followers. They also administer specific religious rites. These rites can include sacrifices or acts of propitiation to honor a deity.

The duties of a priest vary significantly between different faiths. Generally, they mediate the relationship between a congregation and its gods. They may bless worshippers during marriages or after the birth of a child. Priests also teach the wisdom and dogma of a faith during worship services. They provide support during times of grief, such as at funerals. This helps maintain a spiritual connection to the afterlife. Some priests provide counseling for marriages or spiritual direction. They may also hear confessions or visit the sick in hospitals. Beyond spiritual work, they often manage religious buildings and sacred libraries. The modern term "clerical duties" comes from the work of these religious officials.

The history of the priesthood is tied to the development of human society. According to the trifunctional hypothesis of prehistoric Proto-Indo-European society, priests appeared in very early times. This likely happened because of agricultural surplus and social stratification. As societies grew, the need to read sacred texts and keep temple records helped foster literacy. In ancient Sumer, high-ranking priests like Enheduanna held immense power. They owned property, transacted business, and held high social status. In ancient Egypt, the pharaoh held the primary right to interact with the gods. He delegated this authority to priests who acted as bureaucrats on his behalf. These priests staffed temples and cared for cult images.

Different religions use different titles for their leaders. In Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, the term priest is used. Some Lutheran and Anglican branches also use this title. However, other Protestant groups like Methodists or Baptists use the terms minister or pastor. In Judaism, the priesthood was historically inherited through familial lines. Specifically, priests were required to be patrilineal descendants of Aaron. These individuals are known as Kohanim. Their family names, such as Cohen or Kahn, often reflect this lineage. In some societies, a theocracy exists where the priesthood governs the entire state.

Gender roles within the priesthood have changed throughout history. In ancient Rome, certain public priesthoods were held by elite women, such as the Vestal Virgins. In ancient Greece, the Pythia served as a famous priestess at Delphi. She was highly respected for her prophecies. In the 17th century, the English word "priestess" was coined. It was used to describe female leaders in pre-Christian religions. In the 20th century, the term became part of discussions regarding women in the Anglican communion. Today, many traditions refer to clergy as "priests" regardless of their gender.

The nature of a priest's life can also differ. For many, the priesthood is a full-time career. Many Christian priests receive their living directly from their churches. In other historical contexts, it was a part-time role. For example, the Icelandic chieftains known as goði were priests. However, they did not undergo ordination and only offered periodic sacrifices. Some religious leaders are chosen through human election. Others are appointed through specific religious traditions or inherited status.

The concept of the priest connects to many broader fields of study. In anthropology, the term priest or priestess is used to describe mediators in any unknown religion. In linguistics, the etymology of "priest" reveals connections to the Greek word presbyter, meaning "elder." Some theories suggest the word comes from the Latin praepositus, meaning "one placed in charge." This shows how religious roles have shaped language and social organization. Whether through managing temple property in the Ancient Near East or teaching dogma today, priests remain central to religious systems.
