It is part of the Five Pillars of Islam. Many people use these words to show their faith.

The oath has two parts. It says there is only one God. It also says Muhammad is the messenger of God.

Some Shia Muslims add a third part. This part is about a man named Ali. They do not need this part to join the faith.

People say these words in many ways. A father might whisper them to a new baby. They are also said during daily prayers.

Reciting the oath is how people join Islam. It is a very important moment for them.
