Muhammad was the final prophet of Islam. Many people wonder about the women in his life. Muslims call his wives "Umm al-Mu’minīn," which means "Mothers of the Believers." This is a title used to show great respect. Different sources give different numbers of his wives. Some records say he had thirteen wives. Other scholars, like Ali Dashti, list as many as twenty-three. These numbers vary based on different historical accounts and narrations.

His first marriage was a very long one. He married Khadija bint Khuwaylid in the year 595. At that time, Muhammad was 25 years old. Khadija was a wealthy merchant and his employer. They stayed married for 24 years until her death in 619. This year is often called the "Year of Sorrow." They had many children together. Six of his seven biological children were born to Khadija.

After moving to Medina, Muhammad's family life changed. Most of his other marriages happened after the Hijrah. The Hijrah was his migration from Mecca to Medina. He married many women for different reasons. Some marriages helped create political alliances between tribes. Other marriages were meant to help widows in need. Some scholars say his marriages were also based on compassion. He was allowed to have more than four wives because of his status as a prophet.

Life in the household was very simple. The wives lived in small apartments near the mosque in Medina. Each room was about 1.7 meters wide. They were also about 2.3 meters long. The ceilings were only as high as an average man. They used blankets as curtains to cover the doors. One wife, Aisha, was very important to Islamic history. She lived for many years after Muhammad died. She helped collect his sayings, which are called hadith.

Many of these women had lived difficult lives before. Most were already widowed or divorced. For example, Sawdah bint Zam’ah had suffered many hardships. Muhammad's marriages helped build family bonds with his companions. He married the daughters of people like Abu Bakr and Umar. This created a sense of brotherhood through faith. Today, many people still look to these women as important figures. Their graves can be found in the Al-Baqi cemetery in Medina.
