Analysis

math Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Imagine you have a big, complex puzzle. To see how it works, you might take it apart. This way of thinking is called analysis. The word comes from an old Greek term. It means "a breaking-up."

Analysis helps us understand many different things. In math, it is the study of infinite processes. This includes calculus.

In chemistry, scientists use it to find what is in a mix. They might use a device like a clinical chemistry analyzer. They can find the parts or how much of each part is there.

People use analysis in many ways. Musicians study how notes work together. People who study language look at how words are built. Even philosophers use it to find the meaning of words. The opposite of analysis is synthesis. Synthesis is when you put the small pieces back together. It makes a new or different whole.
