Reductionism

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Reductionism is a big idea. It says we can understand complex things by looking at their parts. Think of a large machine. It is made of many small pieces. Reductionism says the machine is just the sum of those pieces.

Some people use this in science. This is called methodological reductionism. Scientists try to explain big systems using tiny parts. For example, they study gas. They say gas heat comes from tiny bits moving. This is called kinetic energy.

Other thinkers look at what things are made of. This is called ontological reductionism. Some believe everything in the world is made of a few simple parts. This can include things like the mind or matter.

There is also theory reductionism. This is when a new idea explains an old one. For instance, Newton's laws can explain how planets move. This makes the new idea more general.

Some people disagree with these ideas. They wonder if some things are more than just their parts. This is a big debate in philosophy. People still ask many questions about how the world works.
