René Descartes was a famous thinker. He said the mind is not a physical thing. The mind does not take up space. He thought the body was a machine. But he said the mind is where we think.

Many people believe the mind and body affect each other. This is called interactionism. It means the mind can change the body. It also means the body can change the mind.

Other thinkers had different views. Aristotle thought humans had a special soul for reason. He believed this part might live on. Plato also had ideas about the soul. He thought the soul could move to a new body.

Some people believe in property dualism. They think the mind comes from the brain. They say the mind is a special trait of the brain. When the brain gets very complex, the mind appears. This is called emergent dualism. People still study these big questions today.
