It is not a physical thing. Most people think the soul lives forever. It may exist apart from the material world.

Different religions have many ideas about it. Christians believe the soul moves to heaven after death. In Hinduism, some believe the soul is part of a larger whole called Brahman.

Islam uses different words to talk about the spirit. Jainism says the soul is eternal but it can change.

Buddhism has a very different view.

They teach that nothing stays the same. They do not believe in a permanent self. They say everything is in a cycle of changing.

Famous thinkers also studied this idea. Plato thought the soul was a person's real self. He believed it could think even after death.
