Physical object

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A physical object is a real thing made of matter. It exists in space and time. Most objects have a boundary. A boundary is a surface that shows what is inside. It also shows what is outside.

Objects can change over time. A rock might lose small pieces. A car might get new wheels. We still call it the same car. This is because of its identity. Identity helps us count objects one by one. If you break an object in two, only one piece keeps the same identity.

Some objects are living things. Others are inanimate, which means they are not alive. A table is an inanimate object. A person is a living object.

We can use our senses to find objects. We see or touch them to learn about them. Scientists also study them. In physics, objects have properties. These include mass and electric charge. Some objects are very small, like a proton. Others are large, like a cloud or a table.
