A shadow is a dark area on a surface. It happens when an object blocks light.

This creates a shape called a silhouette. A silhouette is a dark outline of an object.

Shadows can have different parts. A tiny light makes a sharp shadow called an umbra.

A wider light makes a blurry shadow. This blurry part is called a penumbra. The darkest part is the umbra. In the umbra, you cannot see the light source at all.

Shadows change throughout the day. The sun's position changes how long they are.

Near sunrise, shadows can be very long. When the sun is directly overhead, shadows are very short.

In space, shadows look very sharp. This is because there is no air to spread light. On Earth, shadows can look blue. This happens because the blue sky still lets light in.
