Shadows can look different depending on the light source. A tiny point of light creates a sharp shadow called an umbra. A wider light source creates a blurry edge called a penumbra. There is also a part called the antumbra. The umbra is the darkest part because no direct light reaches it. In the penumbra, the light is only partially blocked.

Shadows change based on where the light comes from. If there are two lights, you might see two shadows. These shadows can overlap to look darker or even change colors.

The way light spreads also matters for how clear a shadow looks. An overcast sky makes soft and indistinct shadows. In the vacuum of space, shadows are very sharp and dark.
