Scientists divide dawn into three parts.

The first part is astronomical dawn. This starts when the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon. This means the sun is far below the line of the Earth. The sky is still very dark here.

The next part is nautical dawn. This begins when the sun is 12 degrees below the horizon. At this time, sailors can see the horizon at sea.

The last part is civil dawn. This starts when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon. Now, there is enough light to do things outside. The sky might look blue. It can also look orange or yellow. You might even see bright planets like Venus.

Dawn does not last the same amount of time everywhere. At the Equator, twilight is very short. It lasts only about 70 minutes. Near the North or South Poles, dawn can last for many hours.
