Physicalism

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Physicalism is a big idea in philosophy. It says that everything in our world is physical. This means everything is made of physical stuff. This stuff includes matter and energy. It also includes space and time. Some people think that only thoughts make up reality. This is called idealism. Physicalism is the opposite of that idea.

Some thinkers group ideas into types. Type physicalism says mental events match physical ones. For example, feeling pain might be a specific physical event.

Other thinkers suggest that the whole is more than its parts. This is called emergentism. It says new things can come from how parts work together.

Many people study these views. A 2020 study found that 51.9% of philosophers hold this view. However, many others disagree. One famous argument uses a girl named Mary. Mary lives in a black-and-white room. She learns all the physical facts about color. But she has never seen color. Some ask if she learns something new when she leaves. They wonder if her experience is more than just physical facts. This is a big question for thinkers today.
