On the Soul

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

A thinker named Aristotle wrote a book called On the Soul.

Aristotelis De anima
Aristotelis De anima

He wrote it a long time ago. He wanted to know what makes things alive. Aristotle said the soul is the essence of a living thing. This means the soul is what a living thing is. He did not think the soul was separate from the body. To him, a body without a soul could not exist.

Aristotle said different living things have different kinds of souls. Plants have a soul that helps them grow and make more plants. Animals have a soul like plants, but they also have more powers. They can feel things through their senses. They can move on their own. They can also feel pleasure or pain. Humans are special because we have all these powers. We also have the power of intellect. This is our ability to think. Aristotle believed the thinking part of the soul might live on. He thought this part was immaterial, which means it is not made of matter. This idea has led many people to wonder and study for a long time.
