Your body uses senses to learn about the world.

Senses gather news from your surroundings. This news is called a stimulus. Your sense organs collect these stimuli. They use a process called transduction. This means they change the news into signals. These signals travel to your brain. Your brain then understands the information.

Humans have many senses. We often think of five. These are sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing. But we have more! We have internal senses too. These are called interoception. They tell you about things inside your body. They help you feel hunger or thirst. They also tell you where your body is in space. This is called proprioception.

Special cells called receptors do the work. They catch different types of news. Mechanoreceptors feel things like pressure or sound. Photoreceptors see light. Chemoreceptors sense smells or tastes. Thermoreceptors feel heat or cold.

Some animals have even more senses. Some can feel magnetic fields. Others use echolocation to find their way.
