Midrash is a special way to study old books. The word comes from a Hebrew root. It means to seek or look for something with care.

People use Midrash to find new ideas in sacred texts. They do not just read the words. They look at the letters and the spaces between them. Some thinkers believe every single letter has a meaning. This helps them find deep truths.

There are two main kinds of Midrash. The first kind is called Halakhic Midrash. This type focuses on religious laws. It helps people understand how to live. The second kind is called Aggadic Midrash. This type is more free. It uses stories and parables to teach. These stories can explore big ideas. They might talk about ethics or even angels.

Some Midrash uses a method called paraphrase. This means telling a story in a new way. Others use allegory. This is when words stand for something else. For example, a story about love might represent a bond with God. Midrash helps people keep learning from their traditions.
