The concept of al-Ākhirah is a very important idea in Islam. The word comes from the Arabic word "akhir," which means the end or the ultimate. It refers to the afterlife, or the life that comes after this world. This belief is one of the six essential pillars of faith for Muslims. It is a belief that many other religions, like Judaism and Christianity, also share. People believe that death is not the end of existence. Instead, it is a transfer from this world to an everlasting one.

Muslims often talk about two different realms. The world we live in now is called the dunya. The dunya is the temporal world, which means it is temporary. The Quran describes the dunya as "now" and the Akhirah as "later." Some verses say the dunya is like a distraction or a sport. Other thinkers say the dunya is a place to carry out God's will. It is a place where people can do good work and follow a moral order.

There is a middle stage between these two worlds called Barzakh. The word Barzakh means a barrier or a separation. It is a phase that happens after a person dies but before they are resurrected. Many Muslims believe that during this time, a person might get a taste of what their afterlife will be like. Some scholars, like Al-Ghazali, suggested it might even be a place for souls that go neither to heaven nor hell. Another scholar, Ibn Hazm, said it is where unborn souls stay in the lowest heaven.

One day, the world will reach its end. This is often signaled by "signs" that are either minor or major. The Quran describes very dramatic events during this time. It says the earth and mountains will shake violently. The mountains might even become like dust or shifting sand. A trumpet will be blown to signal these big changes. The first blast may cause everything to fall dead. Then, a second blast will cause people to rise up from their graves.

This leads to the Day of Judgment, known as Yawm ad-Din. On this day, God will decide how people spend their eternity. Muslims believe people have free will to make their own choices. God judges these choices based on the intention behind the deeds. People may go to Jannah, which is a beautiful heaven with many levels. Others may go to Jahannam, which is a place of hardship or torment. These places have different levels based on a person's actions. In Jannah, the greatest happiness is divine pleasure.
